Honolulu, Hawai`i, December, 2002... KAWAI COCKETT, Hawai`i's Male Vocalist of the Year is STILL STRUMMING!  From his first Hula Records release in 1969 to present, Kawai has carried on the hula tradition.  Known for his unique `ukulele strumming and his powerful vocals, he provides the music the public an hula dancers of the world search for.  And although Kawai continues to say that he's "no spring chicken," the amount of energy he puts into every one of his songs belies that fact.

STILL STRUMMING! features traditional favorites; newer, sure to become classic, hula numbers; and first-time recordings like "Ku`u Sweet Pikake," composed by Kawai for his wife.  This latest release is traditional Hawaiian hula music at its best... featuring one of Hawai`i's living musical treasures.  Kawai, whatever you do, KEEP STRUMMING!

    Haiku
    Riley Lee & Jeff Peterson

Honolulu, Hawai`i, November, 2002...Hula Records International is pleased to announce the release of "HAIKU" - the third in a series pairing the shakuhachi or Japanese bamboo flute by RILEY LEE with JEFF PETERSON's Hawaiian slack key guitar.  While their first two albums explored the simplicity of the bamboo flute and guitar, this new compact disk takes their collaboration to a new level, combining flutes and guitar in multilayered arrangements.  The addition of a bass adds a deep rhythmic component to the soaring harmonies Riley and Jeff have created for this new collection of originals and old favorites.

Internationally acclaimed RILEY LEE has recorded over 50 albums, both as a solo artist and in tandem with others playing instruments such as Australia's didjerido.  JEFF PETERSON was born and raised on Maui where the music of his Hawaiian heritage provided a foundation for Jeff's exploration of classical and jazz forms.  Local audiences will recognize him from performances at Milton Lau's annual Ki Ho`alu Festivals or recitals at The Honolulu Academy of Arts.  Also a noted composer, Jeff's works have been heard in the US and abroad.

    Na Mele `Auhau
    The Kahauanu Lake Singers

Hula Records is proud to present THE KAHAUANU LAKE SINGERS - Na Mele `Auhau (Songs of Tribute).  The full-length CD features seven compositions by their namesake, the incomparable Kahauanu Lake, recipient of The Hawaii Academy of recording Arts' Lifetime Achievement Award.  Three other mele were written in collaboration with Mary Kawena Pukui, the noted conservator of Hawaiian culture.  Because Kahauanu is a direct descendant of King Kamehameha I, many of the songs are tributes to members of the royal family.  Two songs on the album were composed and popularized by the late songbird, Lena Machado. The Kahauanu Lake Singers' crisp delivery, tight harmonies and `ukulele artistry bring to mind the Hoku Award-winning K. Lake Trio who "epitomized perfection in unamplified tradition traditional Hawaiian music in Waikiki from 1955 until well into the '80's."  (John B. White)  The Kahauanu Lake Singers - Vernamae Perkins, Luana & Walter Kawai`ae`a, and "Atai" Akina - under the direction of Kahauanu Lake, are accompanied by "Uncle K" on lead baritone `ukulele, his brother Tommy Lake on acoustic bass, Walter Kawai`ae`a, a 15 year `ukulele student of Uncle K's, and guitarist "Atai" Akina.  Like their mentor, The Kahauanu Lake Singers strive to perpetuate Hawaiian music and culture.

    Sweet Dreaming
    Greg & Junko MacDonald

This is the world's first collection of classical and semi-classical favorites performed by a steel drum duo.  The few steel drum classical albums that exist are large orchestras from the Caribbean.  Sweet Dreaming is more soft, chamber music-like.  Usually this instrument is pounding out a melody along with pulsating rhythms, but here, the exquisite sweetness of the “pan” is the core around which the album was built.

    1. Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring – Bach
    2. Ave Maria – Bach/Gounod
    3. La Donna e Moble – Verdi
    4. Today – Sparks
    5. Amapola – LaCalle/Gamsel
    6. Beautiful Dreamer – Foster
    7. Edelweiss – Rogers
    8. On Wings of Song – Mendelssohn
    9. Over the Rainbow – Arlen
    10. Ave Maria – Schubert
    11. Cannon – Pachelbel
    12. Barcarolle – Offenbach
    13. Santa Lucia – Napolitan Folk Song
    14. What a Wonderful World – Douglas
“The Caribbean is the home of steel drumming, but Greg and Junko MacDonald have brought its distinctive style to Hawaii, releasing four albums and playing hundreds of live dates.  While the couple hammers out the perennial steel drum favorites – think Harry Belafonte – they also explore American pop favorites, island traditionals, and classical works.  While a single steel drummer can create a range of sounds from this magnificent instrument, a duo can increase those dimensions greatly.  One drummer will play a rhythm line while the other plays the melody or the two will harmonize with each other.  And since it's free, there's no good reason to miss the MacDonald’s display of steel drum magic.”  - Spike Bradford, AOL Entertainment Calendar, June 2002

Greg and Junko MacDonald are Hawai`i's premier steel drum group.  After three albums of predominately tropical music, they applying the Caribbean instrument to an assortment of American pop songs and classical melodies by Bach, Schubert and Verdi.  The steel drums’ bright, bell-like sound creates a festive ambiance and presents familiar tunes in a fresh perspective.

The couple embellish their bright percussive arrangements with other instruments.  Junko also plays the grand piano, Shawn Ishimoto, guitar and ukulele, and Pierre Grill, mandolin and keyboards – John Berger’s review 11/30/01 Star Bulletin

    Pidgin English Children's Stories
    Kent Bowman

In 1961, Hula Records' Don McDiarmid Jr. recorded funnyman Kent Bowman telling Pidgin English Stories for Children.  While it may not have been a hit with Hawai`i's educators, the album was instantly accepted by the masses.  Through the years, it has remained in the hearts and minds of those early fans.  By popular demand, we happily make it available for them... and for those of you who nevah heard of da guy!

In 2001, noted Pidgin English author and playwright, Lisa Matsumoto said "What a joy it was to finally hear the work of Kent Bowman.  Only recently was I fortunate enough to experience his local fairy tales.  I found him to be and incredible storyteller; I loved his characters, local style and flavor!  His older style Pidgin English captures a Hawai`i of days past.  What a great way to hear where Pidgin storytelling all began!

    In other words:
Ho, braddah Kent is one unreal storytellah!  He get da kine sound effecks, an evryting!...  Wen it comes to local style fairly tales, dis is one classic!  I give um two thumbs up and one beeg shaka too!"

    Halau Hula Olana

Founded in 1975 by Howard and Olana A`i, Halau Hula Olana, the School of Living Hula, has grown to become one of the largest hula schools in the Islands.  Hundreds of Hawaii's keiki have passed through the halau doors and gone on to charm local audiences and visitors at a multitude of venues on land and aboard cruise ships.  Many of them have taken part in annual hula competitions, performed for four American Presidents or for dignitaries and audiences overseas.  Repeatedly, the halau has been recognized for its excellence.

The voices of kuma hula Olana A`i and her students are heard at the beginning and end of the CD.  In between, you'll hear Olana's talented family: husband Howard, who arranges the songs, sings and plays ukulele; eldest daughter Natalie delivers powerful vocals, sons Tai and Rhett take turns on the bass; and Natalie's husband `Iolani Kamau`u sings and plays guitar.  Together they create the unique A`i family sound as they perform halau favorites.

Hula Records and members of the halau, past and present, are proud to bring you this musical souvenir. Recall enjoyable hula memories of Halau Hula Olana, no matter where you go...

    Collage
    From Kahala Moon
Featuring Mahina Souza and Kahala Mossman
Kahala Moon's debut album features a collection of original soulful contemporary songs that are honest, humorous and reflective of their island influences and musical heritage.

These young women were destined to perform and compose music.  They have the music in their blood!  Their grandmothers, the late Irmgard Aluli and the late Bina Mossman, have composed many popular Hawaiian and hapa-haole songs that continue to be recorded and played today.  Mahina and Kahala pay tribute to grandma Irmgard Aluli by recording grandma's cute, sassy song entitled "Kumu Kalidadidi" on their debut album.

Their original tunes "Beautiful Hawaiian Boys" (are dreams come true - a perfect adonis toy), "Magic in Your Eyes" (a tribute to lovers, both young & old), "Army of Love" (hatred has no chance against this "army"), "It's Our Sunshine" (sharing friendship beneath the Hawaiian sun), "Bottle of Wine" (wine eases the heart), "How's About a Moment" (when your heart wants one more night with him) reflect their many moos and influences; and the cover tunes receive the "Kahala Moon" treatment, rendering each song their very own.  With solid instrumentation by Zanuck Lindsay (guitar), Greg Saradinha (steel guitar, guitar, bass) and Steve Kramer (piano), a well rounded "Collage" of Kahala Moon's music style emerges.
