`Alika ~ Genoa Keawe

Party Hulas

Honolulu, Hawai`i, April, 2001... Hula Records is pleased to announce the release of PARTY HULAS, featuring the voice of GENOA KEAWE on compact disc. The 1965 album produced by Don McDiarmid, Jr. introduced the song `Alika, which was an immediate hit and went on to become Genoa's signature tune. On the recording, “Aunty” Genoa, Hawai`i’s First Lady of Song, accompanies herself on `ukulele and is backed by late greats Vickie Ii Rodgrigues (slack key guitar), Pauline Kekahuna (guitar), Violet Pahu Liliko`i (upright bass) and Benny Rogers (steel guitar). Jean Sullivan, veteran writer and hula dancer, has updated liner notes she wrote for the original release. Lyrics and translations for all songs have been included in the new expanded packaging.

They say that no party in Hawai`i really begins until the music begins... and it really gets going only when someone starts dancing hula.  Here are 12 hula classics performed for you by five of Hawai`i’s best-loved musicians.  They provide the hula tunes. You provide the hula moves and the ono kau kau for an instant party - Hawaiian style!
